Marcus Tran left Ford's NVH lab. Sarah Whitfield closed her last issue at CarSound Australia. They opened a single Marrickville workshop on the premise that Australia deserved a retailer that measured, tuned, and installed car audio — and nothing else.

Section 03 / Timeline

21 years on the bench: a workshop manual timeline.

  1. CH. 01

    2003 — One workshop in Marrickville.

    Marcus Tran (ex-Ford acoustic engineer) and Sarah Whitfield (former CarSound Australia editor) open a single bench in Sydney's inner west. The brief: measure, tune, install. No dash cams, no tyres, no fridges — and no exceptions, twenty-one years later.

  2. CH. 02

    2009 — Exclusive Australian distribution begins.

    Car Audio Australia becomes the exclusive Australian distributor for fourteen premium and boutique brands, including Focal's K2 Power line and the entire Audison Thesis range. The product range stops chasing volume and starts chasing correctness.

  3. CH. 03

    2014 — The Masterfit Installer Network launches.

    184 accredited workshops across every state and territory — the largest specialist installer network in the southern hemisphere. Every install is backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee, certified at the bench, not at the call centre.

  4. CH. 04

    2020–2024 — Five years, five trophies.

    Voted Australia's Best Car Audio Retailer by AutoSound Magazine's Reader's Choice Awards in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. The in-house acoustics lab — the only anechoic chamber in Australian retail — opens in 2022. Today: three warehouses (Sydney HQ, Melbourne, Brisbane), same-day dispatch before 2pm AEST.

We were offered the dash-cam range twice, the dash-cam range three times, and a really compelling deal on tyres around 2011. Every time we said no. Specialists stay sharp because they say no to everything that isn't the job. Twenty-one years later, that's the only decision I'm certain we got right from day one.

Marcus Tran

Ex-Ford NVH acoustic engineer. Spent seven years tuning factory cabin acoustics in Broadmeadows before deciding he'd rather measure speakers in an anechoic chamber than argue with a purchasing department. Runs the in-house acoustics lab.
